The fabulous southern route

As soon as you land at Ivato International Airport, your adventure begins. Warm welcome, transfer to your hotel and first impressions of Antananarivo, the City of a Thousand, perched high on the central Highlands.

The road winds through terraced rice fields and rolling hills. After a five-hour scenic drive, Antsirabe reveals itself: an elegant highland town, rich in history and traditions. Its wide tree-lined avenues, colorful rickshaws and vibrant craft workshops invite you to wander. Here, every smile is a promise of warmth and authenticity.

On the way to Ranomafana, we stop at Ambositra, the capital of Zafimaniry woodcarving, listed as UNESCO World Heritage. Each sculpture and intricate design tells the story of an ancestral art. Then, the road leads us to Ranomafana – “hot waters” – a land of natural springs
and lush rainforest.

An early start to explore one of Madagascar’s most treasured gems. In this rainforest, the air is alive with birdsong and the whispers of streams. Lemurs leap from branch to branch, orchids and giant ferns thrive under the canopy. In the afternoon, relax at the thermal village, then set out on a magical night walk to spot nocturnal lemurs, tiny frogs, and, with some luck, the elusive fossa – Madagascar’s only native carnivore.

After breakfast, we journey to Fianarantsoa and step into the daily life of the Betsileo people. A gentle hike through rice paddies and villages reveals scenes of timeless simplicity: women weaving mats, men shaping clay bricks, children playing in the fields. Lunch is shared with a local family – a moment of genuine hospitality and connection you’ll never forget.

We head south, stopping in Ambalavao to visit the traditional Antemoro paper workshop and the Anja private reserve – home to the famous ring-tailed lemurs and sacred Betsileo tombs. As the landscape shifts to rocky plains and warm colors, we arrive in Ranohira at the gateway to the legendary Isalo Massif.

A day dedicated to awe and wonder. Isalo’s sandstone formations, canyons, and golden plains form one of the island’s most breathtaking landscapes. We set out on two unforgettable hikes: in the morning, to the Lemurs’ Canyon; in the afternoon, to a crystal-clear natural pool, hidden like an oasis in the desert.

The road leads us to Tulear, the “city of the sun,” a lively crossroads of cultures where music, colors and smiles fill the air. After lunch, we continue to Ifaty, a charming fishermen’s village where the turquoise lagoon meets ancient baobab forests.

Two full days to unwind and enjoy the ocean. Swim, snorkel, or dive into coral reefs teeming with life. Sail in a traditional pirogue, explore the Reniala private reserve with its majestic baobabs, or simply relax under the southern sun. Here, time stands still – and you rediscover the true meaning of escape.

Return to Tulear for your flight back to Antananarivo. A final evening in the capital to savor your last Malagasy moments.
